Environment We believe it is important that we minimize any impact our business may have on the environment. We cannot do this alone and rely on the help of all our visitors to achieve this aim. AMENITY BLOCK Opened in 2008 this is a timber-framed well-insulated building. Hot water and underfloor heating is supplied by a ground source heat pump. This takes the heat from geothermal loops buried under ground and turns it into usable hot water. Solar Photovoltaic panels were installed in June 2011.

All the lighting and ventilation is sensor controlled and the lighting uses low energy lamps. To make sure we do not waste water all taps and shower controls are the self-closing type, the toilets are dual-flush and the gents urinals are waterless. All chemical toilet waste is collected in a holding tank and taken away by tanker when full. Paving slabs were re-used around the block. RECYCLING We have separate containers for recycling bottles (plastic and glass), cans and paper. Our main waste contractor also sorts and recycles over 70% of our remaining rubbish. FURTHER ACTIONS Our main road side signage is lit by solar lights. During the summer months we leave an unmown border around the edge of the camping field for the benefit of wildlife. All grassed areas are mown using mulching equipment, thus putting the goodness back into the soil. We minimise use of chemicals on the Park as far as practicably possible. No pesticides are used. BUS ROUTE 81 Visitors to Elm Cottage can now leave their vehicles on the park and use the bus to visit Winsford and Chester. The bus can be flagged down close to the park entrance and will drop you off virtually at the gate. Winsford has two major supermarkets and an under cover shopping precinct. Chester is renowned for its roman past and its historic, two tiered shopping promenade known as the Rows. FRYDAYS Our onsite catering trailer serving quality fish & chips was a new addition to our facilities in 2011. This means less car journeys for our customers wanting a take away supper. Wherever possible all the packaging used is bio-degradeable and our choice of cooking oil means there is less waste oil to be recycled. Our chips come fresh from a local potato farmer and the local residents are welcome to use this facility. Recognition and Awards Each year the Practical Caravan magazine holds a Top 100 Sites competition where its readers can vote for their favourite parks. We were delighted that our visitors enjoyed their stay so much that in 2011 their votes placed Elm Cottage =3rd overall and the Regional Winner for the Heart of England area. A very big thank you to all who voted for us. In 2008 we were delighted to be presented Gold Award status with The David Bellamy Conservation Award Scheme on our first year of being assessed. The assessor was really enthusiastic about the park and thought it was “a real gem”, pointing out that the Amenity Block was the best he had ever assessed. We have continued to achieve the Gold Award in each successive year.

At the BH&HPA (British Homes & Holiday Parks Association) Conference held in Blackpool in early 2009, we were extremely pleased to receive an “Award of Special Distinction” from Professor David Bellamy for building our environmentally friendly amenity block. 2008 was the first year of these Special Distinction Awards and Elm Cottage was one of only 15 that year to receive this honour for innovation and special environmental initiatives. The following were comments that some of you sent to David Bellamy on feedback postcards:-

"We have been visiting Elm Cottage for many years now. Everytime we return we can see there has been a great deal of time, money and effort spent improving the site. They are making things as environmentally friendly as possible. I know a lot of the work is done by the owners and staff with hired help when needed. They are kind, friendly people. This is a fantastic site and I will be back." "I have visited this park for the last three years and have seen many improvements all of which are sympathetic to the environment. This year there have been many more trees planted and the wildlife is in abundance." This is one of the comments made by this years assessor:- "Once again the park looked immaculate and the vibrant 'tardis' style reception offers everything a visitor could wish for or need, from local food to an array of tourist information designed to help steer the visitor to good quality experiences. The staff were once again most welcoming and friendly, traits now typical of the Elm Cottage experience." Many thanks to all our visitors for their contributions in helping us achieve this prestigious award. We look forward to your continued support with our initiatives for the future.
